The Appeal

To know us is to know we are drawn to great 70’s modern architecture, and this home, with its low-slung roofline, deep eaves and porte cochere, was no exception.  Located in a historic neighborhood of early 20th century estate homes and grand tudors, the unique style and sophistication of this mid-century gem stood out and definitely piqued our interest.  And though it had been neglected for quite some time, we saw an opportunity - not just to update it but to create something really special and timeless.  We honestly felt like this house, in this neighborhood, deserved it. 

The Challenges

At nearly 6000 SF (and all on one level!), the overall layout was serviceable, but the rooms suffered from a lack of functionality and a significant amount of wasted space. And, despite a considerable amount of glass and natural light, the home was quite dark and dreary. With the exception of an original stone interior wall and slate entry floor, there were no other interior details worth salvaging. The pool was unusable and the backyard was an uninviting and overgrown mess. Nothing of consequence was worth saving. This gave us the freedom (and responsibility) to create spaces that would honor both the spirit of the home and the neighborhood.
